Artists Announced for Beyond Autumn Award 22

By Laura Fisher on 26.10.22

On Wednesday 28 September, we held our second round of the newly relaunched BEYOND, to select a recipient for the BEYOND: Autumn Award.

Beyond is a seed funding initiative, which aims to nurture, support and kick start artist-led projects and practices that take dance beyond the studio to connect more people to dance, while also fostering collaboration and artistic community within TWR membership.

Piloting a first round in 2018, Beyond was relaunched in May 2022 following a period of consultation with a working group of members, to redesign the fund and experiment with different processes of decision-making, adopting a random selection process for awarding funds  (More about the process here).

The Beyond: Autumn Award selection involved a peer review process by members Chrissie Ardill and Lottie Barker, who checked the EOI's against the funds eligibility criteria, shared some responses and thoughts on the proposals to support their onward journey, and witnessed the random selection process to confirm its legitimacy.

We are happy to announce that the project selected was: Collective Endeavours with their project “Wee Open Floor Day (working title)”

Collective Endeavours (CE) is an improvisation performance company involving TWR members Aya Kobayashi, Jer Reid, Molly Danter, Solene Weinachter, Dylan Read, and Bethany Edwards, in which a group of musicians and dancers meet regularly to develop rigorous methods and practices of performance improvisation. Emerging from the pandemic, they have identified a need to reconnect with people; friends and family, neighbours and peers which has led to collective dreaming of curating an event and a meeting place for needed conversations, with performances, workshops and space to hang out and share food.

Since Aya became a mother a few years ago, she has started bringing her daughter Hana to rehearsals, and this has encouraged CE to think about cultivating environments in which people can exist authentically in their multiplicities (such as artist and mother). Their project Wee Floor Open Day (working title) aims to do this by sharing their improvisation practice to the wider community through family friendly public events. They hope that the event will allow everyone to get what they need!

CE plan to host four events annually, coinciding with the seasons. Beyond will support them in piloting the first community event at Kinning Park Complex in Spring 2023.

As ever, we are grateful to all our members who took the time and creativity to share an idea in their EOI for Beyond or participate in the selection process. Those projects not selected in the Autumn Draw will have the opportunity to be entered into the Winter Awards draw

Beyond is currently open for submissions of EOI's to be entered into the Winter Awards draw and the deferred focussed draw that seeks to address systemic inequalities. Members should submit EOI's on or before Tuesday 29 November, to be considered for these awards.
