Mele Broomes

Mele’s work embodies stories from the collective voice, creating visceral and sensory collaborations through her ancestral heritage. Working between directing, creative producing, choreography and performance. Activating social questions, remembering and celebrating.

Over the years Mele has been in dialogue with the creative sector in Scotland around decision making related racist structures and artists. Mele has been actioning artistic platforms for Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC). Through the mediums of dance, performance, visual art. research, music production, writing, poetry, video, graphic design and illustration.

Mele founded V/DA (2011-2020) where Mele developed her work as a choreographer and director. Mele is co-founder of Project X Dance and co-director (2017-2021). A collectively run organisation that champions dance and performance within the African and Caribbean Diaspora in Scotland. Currently Mele is developing Body Remedy. A resource to support the physical and mental wellbeing for Black Womxn, Womxn of Colour + Non Binary People of Colour.

Mele has presented work and/or delivered workshops, mentorship, guest lecturing with Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), University of Dance and Circus (DOCH), London Contemporary Dance School, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW), Scottish Contemporary Art Network, V&A Dundee, Project X Dance, Vogue Scotland , Dundee Rep Theatre, SPLAYED Festival, The Riley, Fringe of Colour Films, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Traverse Theatre and Dance International Glasgow.

Her work has been associated with organisations such as Tramway, Take Me Somewhere, Scottish Dance Theatre, The Work Room, Dance Base, CONTACT Manchester, Black Gold Art, Once Dance UK.
