Hanna Lappalainen

I'm a performer, filmmaker and writer based in Edinburgh. With a background both in dance and film, my practice is led by the dialogue between the two art forms. Over the years I've worked both behind and in front of the camera, taught screendance workshops, and my work has been screened at film festivals internationally.

The themes which inform my practice revolve around identity, language and the performer-audience relationship. In all my work I continue to explore humour, shared humanity and my ongoing practice of improvisation. As a disabled, working-class queer immigrant, I'm passionate about inclusivity and breaking down barriers through taking creative practices into communities and to individuals who are or feel excluded by it. I'm working on a practice for developing participatory screendance work; my most recent screendance piece Four Pieces on Being Seen is a dance film which was made as a community project with LGBTQ+ participants and is currently touring festivals.
