EJ Boyle

I am a Choreographer, Movement Director and Intimacy Director who creates movement and dance for theatre, musical theatre, film, television, editorials, commercials and large-scale events. I am based in my hometown of Glasgow, and work across the UK and North America.

I trained at the Dance School of Scotland, the Royal Ballet School and London Studio Centre. My subsequent performance career as a dancer and actor included Rufus Norris’ Olivier Award winning production of Cabaret, the original cast and dance captain of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s award winning Matilda the Musical, as Christine in Dexter Fletcher’s film of Sunshine on Leith and as a company member of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures. I then went on to work as assistant/associate choreographer for Liam Steel, Javier de Frutos and Arthur Pita.

My movement influences are diverse, reflective of my varied training in classical ballet, American jazz dance and contemporary dance, and my later experiences of working with text and song. I love the continued variation that my work brings, across different forms, genres and media's, and the collaborations with directors, writers, composers, actors, dancers, lighting, sound, set and costume designers. Music and narrative are always my starting point.

My work as Movement Director includes Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt, (West End and Broadway, Olivier Award for Best New Play and Tony Award for Best Play), Henry VI (Royal Shakespeare Company), Measure for Measure (Shakespeares Globe), Trainspotting (Citizens Theatre), Exit the King (National Theatre), Nora: A Doll’s House (Citizens THeatre and Young Vic) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Regents Park) and Oresteia: This Restless House (Citizens Theatre and Edinburgh International Festival.)

Work as Movement and Intimacy Director includes Adults (Traverse Theatre), The Fair Maid of the West (Royal Shakespeare Company) and Nachtland (Young Vic)

Choreographic work includes Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (UK Tour), The Grand Old Opera House Hotel (Traverse Theatre), Sunshine on Leith (UK Tour), Still Game: Live (SECC Hydro), The Red Balloon (National Youth Ballet, Sadlers Wells) and Pride and Prejudice* (*Sort Of) (Tron, UK Tour, West End - Olivier Award for Best Comedy).

My choreography also features in Netflix’ multi-award winning series The Crown, the 1950’s set ITV series In Plain Sight, the Sony feature film Our Ladies, and the indie film musical God Help The Girl (Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize).

In 2014 I was Creative Associate and Choreographer for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, working with a volunteer cast made up of 1200 adults, young people and children, and I have since enjoyed working on a number of large scale, volunteer cast events.

I was previously Lecturer in Musical Theatre and Dance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and have been a trained pilates instructor for 18 years.
