Announcing: Second Artists Awarded Seed Funding in BEYOND Spring Awards 2023

On Tuesday 07 March, we held our fourth and final round of BEYOND in the 22-23 funding cycle, to select two recipients for the BEYOND: Spring Awards.

Beyond is a seed funding initiative, which aims to nurture, support and kick start artist-led projects and practices that take dance beyond the studio to connect more people to dance, while also fostering collaboration and artistic community within TWR membership.

Piloting a first round in 2018, Beyond was relaunched in May 2022 following a period of consultation with a working group of members, to redesign the fund and experiment with different processes of decision-making, adopting a random selection process for awarding funds  (More about the process here).

The Beyond: Spring Awards selection involved a peer review process by members Salma Faraji and Alex Tsiapi, who checked the EOI's against the funds eligibility criteria, shared some responses and thoughts on the proposals to support their onward journey, and witnessed the random selection process to confirm its legitimacy.

We are happy to announce the second of the two projects selected in this round is: Carmen Berbel-Lapaz & Niamh O’Loughlin with Four Seasons

Carmen & Niamh:

Through Beyond, we will begin to deliver an intergenerational dance project titled Four Seasons, which will offer four community groups local to Perth and Dundee introductory movement workshops exploring different seasons from Vivaldi’s composition of the same name.

Having worked together for over a year co-delivering movement sessions for a group of disabled teenagers with Perth Theatre and Concert Halls, Four Seasons is an opportunity to continue developing our collaboration, work with dancers from the group on an independent project, and connect with new groups in the area.

The workshops will utilise classical music scores and imagery to introduce participants to movement and ways of embodying the seasons. The project supports early research into themes around age, ageing and the seasons that we hope may develop into a larger scale intergenerational performance project in future.

As ever, we are grateful to all our members who took the time and creativity to share an idea in their EOI for Beyond and participate in the selection process.

The Spring Awards Draw was the final awards draw in this 2022-2023 round of Beyond funding. Beyond will now be paused pending a process of evaluation, and to allow the funds to re-accumulate ahead of another round of seed funding. Please keep an eye on TWR website and newsletters for details on this later in the year
