Lesley Howard is undertaking a remote research process supported by an Artist Research Bursary

Lesley says: "I will be researching ideas to create a training/development day. Collaborating with Clare Adam to share our experiences of being an Autistic and a Deaf Dance Artist with other artists particularly those working in ‘mainstream’ dance.

As recent graduates we have noticed there is a huge gap within our dance community for those with invisible disabilities. We are often overlooked within the disabled world as we came through mainstream training, however when navigating the mainstream world our disabilities encounter lots of challenges. Many of the barriers we faced during our time attending mainstream dance schools from a young age and then mainstream professional training, were purely due to the lack of education and understanding of invisible disabilities. We want to help bridge this gap by providing a safe space for questions to be asked without fear of judgement, after all education is the key."

The Artist Research Bursaries are a new strand of support introduced by The Work Room in response to the ongoing and precarious position of freelance dance artists during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly artist members who currently experience barriers to returning to studio practice. The bursary awards support members with flexible, remote research time to sustain and deepen their artistic practice in these uncertain times. The support is offered without a required outcome although The Work Room will support members to share or disseminate research where appropriate.
