Malcolm Sutherland Between Scylla & Charybdis

08—13.12.25

Between Scylla & Charybdis is a new solo dance theatre work performed by collaborator Katie Armstrong.

The project explores the moral impasse faced by a therapist who receives incriminating information from a patient, and the impossible decision between breaking confidentiality (and causing one form of destruction) or protecting it (and risking another).

This impossible choice echoes the ancient Greek monster Scylla on one side, and Charybdis on the other—a narrowing channel where every route forward is ruinous. I am interested in the embodied experience of the “no-win” choice, and how the body metabolises ethical conflict.

This period of Research has been made possible thanks to the kind support of the Creative Scotland Open Fund.
