Birds of Paradise – Movement Director Shadowing opportunity

Arts Practice | Deadline: 03.06.2019

In August 2019, Birds of Paradise Theatre Company is reviving the acclaimed production of Purposeless Movements for performances as part of Edinburgh International Festival.

Four men stand on stage. They have cerebral palsy. When they were born, doctors called their condition ‘purposeless movements’. For them, it’s just how they move.

Purposeless Movements is a dance theatre work directed by BOP’s Artistic Director, Robert Softley Gale with Movement and Associate Director, Rachel Drazek. You can read more about this production here.

We are collaborating with BoP to offer a Work Room member the opportunity to shadow the re-staging of this work. The selected person will spend 10 days with the company during their rehearsal period in Glasgow from 29 July – 17 August, with performances at EIF 19 – 24 August. This is an opportunity to learn about movement direction in theatre and is specifically targeted at someone in the early stage of their career with no or limited experience in working in this context.

The Work Room will provide a bursary of £700 to the selected artist, with an additional budget available for travel and access support. The schedule for the shadowing opportunity will be agreed with the selected artist in agreement with the BoP creative team.
