Overview
At the heart of The Work Room (TWR) is our programme of supported, choreographic residencies. These are 1 or 2 week funded residencies for TWR members, to take place in our studio or remotely. Our residency programme supports self-led time for our members to explore ideas and projects. We aim to support a balance of research, development, and production residencies. The programme runs all year round, with applications open twice a year.
As an artists-led organisation, the selection process is peer-assessed with decisions taken by a working group of members. The final selection will be informed by our values and aim to support a wide range of artists and practices, reflective of the membership, and a fair and equitable sharing of resources. Following a member-led process of evaluation and review of our residency programme, we recently updated our residency offer, to better facilitate collaborative and collective working. In September 2026, we also begin delivering our longer-term choreographic development programme, COHORT, which supports 4 artist members to develop choreographic enquiries and practice over the course of 12 months, and runs alongside our year-round residency programme. About The Residency Programme
The residency period is from March 2027 – September 2027. We have a total of £20,000 in bursary fees and up to 16 weeks of studio space to allocate in this round. In this round, there is limited studio availability for residency weeks between March – May 2027, due to residencies allocated to the COHORT and International programmes.
This call out welcomes proposals for studio residencies in our purpose built studio space in Tramway, Glasgow, and proposals for alternative approaches to residencies, which are responsive to the needs, enquiry and circumstances of individual artists and their practices. Previously, we have supported proposals for residencies taking place outdoors and on-site, closer to home for artists unable to travel to Glasgow, and flexible working patterns.
Each selected artist will receive a bursary of between £800 - £1200 per week (more information on our new Tier system in the Application Guidance document).
The residencies are awarded in weeks (1 or 2 weeks) but could be worked flexibly (5 days or 10 days) around other work/life commitments
Eligibility
Applicants for a residency should:
- Be a current member of The Work Room (find out how to become a member here)
- Be a lead or joint-lead artist on only one application during residency period (March—September 2027)—however you can be involved in other members’ applications as collaborators and/or performers
- Not be a member of the current COHORT 26 -27
Members who’ve recently been awarded a residency at TWR may still apply, but the panel will take this into consideration to ensure a fair spread of resources across our membership.

- 26 October 2026, 23:59 - Deadline for submitting applications
- w/c 14 December 2026 - All applicants will be notified of decisions
- March 2027 - September 2027 - Residencies will take place*
*If you have a strong reason for applying now for a residency later in 2027, the panel has the discretion to consider this in exceptional circumstances.
All residencies are subject to programming availability and flexibility around dates assists with scheduling residency time.

Applications are made by:
- Downloading and completing the APPLICATION FORM. Responses can be made in writing or with an audio or video recording.
- Ensuring your MEMBERSHIP PROFILE is up to date, as the panel will refer to this for information on your practice.
- Saving the completed application form as a Word or PDF document.
- If you are applying by audio or video, please paste a link with any passwords required into the application form. You can find guidance on creating video and audio applications here.
- EMAILING your completed application to applications@theworkroom.org.uk by 23:59 on Monday 26 October 2026.

Panel Selection
All applications are peer-assessed by a panel of four TWR members who are not involved in applications at this round. We operate a conflict of interests process to manage inappropriate or undue influence on decision making.
The Work Room uses a peer-selection process for awarding residencies. We do this through a panel of artist members who review and discuss all applications in line with the assessment criteria, collectively put forward a selection of proposals for residencies, and offer feedback on all applications.
