Artists Announced: BEYOND Autumn Award 2024
BEYOND AUTUMN AWARD 2024. The Work Room is pleased to announce the next member-led project awarded seed funding from BEYOND in the 2024 funding cycle.
In September, we held the third awards draw of BEYOND in the 2024 funding cycle, to select a recipient of the BEYOND Autumn Award 2024.
Beyond is a seed funding initiative, which aims to nurture, support and kick start artist-led projects and practices that take dance beyond the studio to connect more people to dance, while also fostering collaboration and artistic community within TWR membership.
Piloting a first round in 2018, Beyond was relaunched in May 2022 following a period of consultation with a working group of members, to redesign the fund and experiment with different processes of decision-making, adopting a random selection process for awarding funds. BEYOND is now in its third funding cycle. In the 2024 Awards ccyle, BEYOND is making 4 x seed funding awards of £1500.
The Beyond Autumn Award 2024 was made following a peer review process by members Jen Wren and Natalia Barua, who checked the EOIs against the fund’s eligibility criteria, shared some responses and thoughts on the proposals to support their onward journey, and witnessed the random selection process to confirm its legitimacy.
We are happy to announce the project selected in this round is ‘The Canary Jam: A digital movement space for delicate bodies’ by Stephanie Arsoska & Laura Steckler.
The Canary Jam will explore the co-creation of an online movement improvisation space for people who experience PEM (post exertional malaise) or energy limitations.
The project will see Laura & Stephanie research and exchange ideas for structure and approach to practice, before taking their experiments into a digital space with participants. Aiming to be a nourishing and compassionate space encouraging rest and minimalism, they will collaborate closely with participants, sharing and incorporating ideas and feedback to experiment with accessible approaches to moving with fatigue.
Through the project they hope to begin utilising digital platforms to co-create a remote community of people with energy limitations who would like to explore ways to safely move, dance together and inspire one another.
As ever, we are grateful to all our members who took the time and creativity to share an idea in their EOI for Beyond and participate in the selection process. Projects not selected in the Autumn Draw will have the opportunity to be entered into the Winter Awards draw
Beyond is currently open for submissions of EOIs to be entered into the Winter 2024 Awards draw. Members should submit EOIs on or before Thursday 28 November, to be considered for this awards. The Winter Award is the last seed funding award for the 2024 funding cycle.
