Yifeng Zhu
Yifeng Zhu is a Chinese choreographer and director based in Edinburgh. He holds a PhD in Choreography and Dance Education and previously worked as a university lecturer in choreography in China before returning to the UK to develop his independent artistic practice.
His work has been presented internationally, including at Canterbury Festival, Avignon and Edinburgh. In 2026, he undertook a residency in Bristol to develop Delivered, which was later presented in Edinburgh.
His current practice is shaped by his experience of moving between Chinese and British cultural and artistic contexts, as well as his position as a gay Chinese artist living in Scotland. At the centre of his current choreographic thinking is a simple question: why does this movement need to exist?
Rather than beginning with movement itself, he is interested in how movement can emerge through concrete connections between bodies, objects, memory, everyday actions, people and lived experience. His current research also questions his own choreographic knowledge, asking how training, education, culture and personal experience shape what we recognise as choreography.
