Mariia Bahach
Mariia is a Scotland-based multidisciplinary artist working in music and dance performance, connecting it with improvisation and composition. Her work explores different concepts and stories, showing how they can be expressed through a close interaction between music and dance.
The piece "Figures in Sea Glass" was created in collaboration with contemporary composer Hannah Siddiqui, featuring a solo choreography created and performed by Mariia. Exploring the theme of womanhood, it was presented at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as part of the Plug Festival, as well as in the concert "Art Collaboration: A Journey Between Music, Dance & Visual Art."
Mariia seeks to forge a deeper connection between music and dance, letting them interact to tell compelling stories through sound and movement. Believing in the powerful synergy between the two disciplines, she strives to push their artistic boundaries. Her journey began with live improvisation in music and dance, ultimately leading to a three-part series (The Cycle of the Universe, First Meeting, and Unit 3)—works built on different movement textures connected directly to sound.
Her biggest inspiration in the dance world is rooted in the work of Akram Khan, Crystal Pite, and Dickson Mbi. She was especially impressed by Dickson Mbi's 'Twice Born', where he created both the music and choreography himself, deeply connecting the work to community and heritage.
