Kathryn Spence

I choreograph, move and create. I enjoy working with others, and being inspired by things around me, be it culture, environment or moments in time. I trained at Laban, and have since worked from the Highlands of Scotland to the coast of Cambodia, using dance as a tool to engage and connect, and aim for it to be a mechanism for change. I love to create and wish to explore ways in which I can dance, and use movement to connect with others, and with other artforms.
I have experience in dancing for choreographers such as Tony Thatcher and Lindsay Kemp, and have been in residence with White and Givan. I have been assistant choreographer for a David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) music video and loved the cross artform exploration that came with this.
Most recently I have been working in dance festival curation, being Festival Co-Director of DanceLive18 with Citymoves Dance Agency, Aberdeen and implementing and managing the dance programme at Hidden Door Festival 2018, Edinburgh.
I am currently based in Shetland working as Creative Project Manager for Shetland Arts. I am interested in building connections and creating more dance opportunities in the isles. I am passionate about continuing my own dance and choreography practice alongside this role. Here I have been commissioned by BBC to create a dance film and have made larger scale pieces, hopefully to tour them.
I choreographed a duet with a Lebanese collaborator through a British Council funded project at Dance Base and we performed this in Edinburgh and Beirut. I hope very much so to pursue this further.
