Butoh carries within it two distinct lineages of training. The first is rooted in the practice of Tatsumi Hijikata — the use of *butoh-fu* (score-based notation), a method that encompasses both choreographic thinking and rigorous physical conditioning. The second follows the philosophy of Kazuo Ohno — an approach grounded in the natural world, in which life and nature are understood through a deeply philosophical lens.
This workshop offers an encounter with both traditions. Guided by Pik Kei, a contemporary dance artist with 11 years of practice spanning Butoh and concert dance, participants will explore how these two systems speak to and expand one another.
The day begins with improvisation as a way of opening and discovering movement that is particular to each individual body. Butoh practice is then brought alongside this — not to replace it, but to lift it into a different register of energy and presence. Through the spatial imagination that Butoh cultivates, and the life philosophy it carries, movement is taken into another dimension of embodied expression.
