Pro Class with Bethany Edwards
This is our co-run weekly, morning contemporary class with Barrowland Ballet, for the professional dance community in Glasgow on Thursdays and Fridays. The classes began in 2018 in response to the lack of professional-level contemporary dance classes in the city, providing a space for independent dance artists to come together to train and sustain practice. Thursday:
Bethany's class centres the unique joy that moving through space with others brings. Working with various tools we will explore physical specificity, technical proficiency and embodied imagination. This energetic floorwork class will hopefully leave you sweating and smiling.
We will warm up with strength and technical exercises focused on moving into, out of and across the floor and low to the ground. Usually, we will practice running to find pleasure in moving with power, speed and agility and train working upside down to increase confidence towards more acrobatic movement. Building this into longer phrases that allow us to dig into our dance together.
Friday:
Bethany’s class aims to centre the unique joy that moving with others can bring. Through simple, practical, physical provocations we warm up with personal movement investigation. These tasks then come into relation with others as we start to play with pathways through space.
Throughout the class we will be gently opening our awareness into performance, noticing what changes through observing and being observed. Composing together through actively doing and watching.
We will be working with scores around accessing our ambition in movement, how to welcome that in, let go of it and play with the silliness of it all.
Bethany will bring an eclectic playlist. The music is there to be danced with, danced over, and danced through.
