Performance Practice and the Land: Site-Specific Performance / Embodiment Practice
The Work Room
Sunday, 27 October 2024 | 12 Noon – 4.30 PM (with a 30 minute break) | The Work Room
Member-Led Event from Monica De Ioanni
Drawing on my experience in inclusive, participatory dance, together with my background in environmental science, I invite members of The Work Room to reflect together on ongoing movement research that intertwines site-specific performance with embodiment practices. As an artist, I feel an increasing urgency to create work that deeply engages with communities, promotes ecological awareness, and highlights the interconnectedness of our body, mind, and environment. How can artistic practice facilitate the emergence of new perspectives, foster creative relationships, and inspire inclusive dialogue with both the land and our audiences?
This event will offer a day of sharing and experimentation—an interdisciplinary space focused on the intersection of site-specific performance and embodiment practice. It also aims to contribute to the development of methodologies for creating immersive performance experiences.
The morning session (12 am - 2pm) will serve as an open studio where TWR members are invited to witness and/or participate in my ongoing movement research. During this time, we will focus on deepening our compositional practices through somatic and ecological approaches, seeking to create a perceptual shift in how we understand ourselves—not just as individuals, but as interconnected entities with our bodies, minds, and the land. How can we embody a dialogue with the evolving and ever-changing landscape? In what ways can movement, sound, voice evolve in response to our environment? In the second part of the day (2.30pm-4.30pm), I invite TWR members to engage in discussions and experiments focused on effectively involving audiences and developing immersive experiences.
All performance practitioners, regardless of their artistic backgrounds, are welcome to bring their own interests into this collaborative exploration. The event will take place in both TWR studio and the Hidden Gardens. Please wear comfortable clothing and layers to adapt to changes in our working environment. Members can choose to participate in either part of the event or attend both.
