Co-hosted by Colette Sadler / Stammer Productions and The Work Room
Saturday 11 January 2025 | 11 – 4pm | The Work Room
***FULLY BOOKED***
Dramaturgy in Dance and Performance is a workshop for dramaturges and artists who work with, or are curious about working with, dramaturges in the fields of dance and contemporary performance. Facilitated by Maxwell McCarthy, the workshop will explore performative frames for daring to question and define dramaturgical practices together.
The workshop aims to move through a collectively created landscape of thoughts, questions, and responses toward fluid definitions of dramaturgy and dramaturgical practice in dance and performance.
Dramaturgy in Dance and Performance is open to Work Room members and others working in dance and performance. As well as choreographers, dramaturges and performance makers, the workshop will be relevant to those who support creative processes in a breadth of roles, such as ‘outside-eyes’, mentoring, and in facilitating feedback.
Maxwell McCarthy is a longstanding creative collaborator of Colette Sadler/ Stammer Productions and is dramaturg on their new work, The Violet Hour will premiere in Dusseldorf (Tanzhaus NRW) in January 2025 before returning to Glasgow (Tramway) in May 2025. Since graduating with a BA in Contemporary Performance Practice from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2008, Maxwell has collaborated with choreographers, theatre makers, and visual artists on over 30 new works. Having worked as a dancer and dance-maker, he has focused on dramaturgy for dance since 2019. Parallel to his work in dramaturgy, Maxwell co-leads a long-term project between dance and ecology called Punctures, and is a member of Tools for Friction, a Berlin-based collective of dramaturges and creative producers working in the field of contemporary dance.
The workshop will take place at The Work Room studio within Tramway and is free to attend. A vegetarian lunch will be provided.

Colette Sadler / Stammer Productions – Artist Development Strand
In recent years Colette Sadler and Stammer Productions has expanded our Education and Talent Development Arm through cultivating professional development opportunities for dancers and emergent choreographers to receive training through workshops, company class and longer-term mentorship attached to both our productions and ‘Present Futures’ festival programmes. This has become an integral aspect of our role in the Scottish Dance Sector which we hope to cultivate further.
