Moving Beyond the Studio: Dance, People & Placemaking

10:30–12:30 on 08.10.24
Civic House

The Work Room (TWR) and Glasgow Connected Art Network (GCAN) warmly invite you to join us at Civic House on Tuesday 8 October, for Moving Beyond the Studio: Dance, People, and Placemaking, a morning of artistic insights and conversation into the role dance can play in community and placemaking.

Celebrating six years since TWR launched our BEYOND seed funding initiative and individual giving campaign, we are inviting, members, artists, supporters, and organisations to join us in discussion around themes of dance, people and placemaking, sharing some of the projects BEYOND has supported to date and the practices and approaches artists are taking to move dance beyond the studio and into our communities.

Placemaking: A process through which places that people want to live, work, or explore are created. Placemaking pays close attention to the myriad ways in which the physical, social, ecological, cultural, and even spiritual qualities of a place are intimately intertwined.

How might dance, movement or choreographic practice contribute to the process of placemaking, or transferring SPACE to PLACE?

WHEN & WHERE

10:30 AM – 12:30 PM on Tuesday 8 October

The event will take in the 'Venue' space (ground floor) of Civic House, Glasgow

Civic House, 26 Civic Street, Glasgow, G4 9RH | Civic House Access Information

THE EVENT

The morning will welcome contributions from artists who have previously undertaken BEYOND funded projects, with TWR as well as provocations and discussions. The event will be hosted by Laura Fisher, who has been leading on the BEYOND fund for TWR for the past few years.

We are excited to announce the line up of artists presenting at the event includes:

Kirstin Halliday | BEYOND Summer 2022 Awardee

Kirstin will share some reflections on their BEYOND supported project 'In the Gardens', which they facilitated with Anya Sirina in 2022. The project references the 1960s architecture of the Langside estate and the ethos around community and communal gathering it was built around, and principles of 1960s post modern dance, to engage neighbours in movement in the estate gardens. They will screen a short film by Rosie Roberts which documented some of the sessions.

Aya Kobayashi & Jer Reid | BEYOND Autumn 2022 Awardees awarded to Collective Endeavours

Aya and Jer join each other in conversation representing Collective Endeavours, to reflect on their BEYOND supported project 'A Wee Open Floor Day', which saw the collective host a family friendly day of movement, food, performance and conversation at Kinning Park Complex centreing their creative and political approach to practice.

Penny Chivas & Stephanie Hellewell Baird | BEYOND Summer 2024 Awardees

Penny will share reflections on their BEYOND supported project 'Orcadian Dances' in person, and Stef will offer a remote contribution giving insights into her practice and the unique challenges of developing dance on Orkney over the past 20 years. 'Orcadian Dances' saw Penny & Stephanie collaborate to explore a possible model for bringing visiting artists to Orkney, which saw them co-lead workshops with three community groups across different islands of Orkney.

Nancy Jacinto (Ahmar)

We are excited to also host a movement offering from Nancy Jacinto (Nancy Ahmar), who will invite attendees to join in the learning of Dabke, a folk dance which translates from Arabic to mean 'to stomp the feet' and is often performed as an act of art as resistance to occupation, joy and community by the people of Palestine.
